Westbury Rangers A secure cup final place with narrow win

The first of this season’s Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup semi-final ties was won by Westbury Rangers A who beat Cooper Avon 2-1 in the all premier division tie of the reebrooks print media-sponsored cup competition to set up a final showdown with either Biddestone Social or The Crown FC.

Like the appetiser to the main event which Westbury won 2-1 a few weeks ago, missed chances again were to lead to Cooper’s downfall but the game turned on a controversial second half decision which saw Westbury awarded a hotly disputed penalty.

In front of a healthy crowd at Devizes Town’s Nurstead Road ground Cooper nearly took the lead when James Ponsford’s shot cannoned of the underside of the bar only to bounce away from goal rather than going over the line. Graham Griffiths also rattled the woodwork for the tyremen who knew at this stage that it wasn’t going to be their day and after a goalless first half they knew the gods were against then when they conceded a penalty which they though was harshly awarded after it looked as if goalkeeper Alex Shaftoe had knocked the ball out for a corner but on the say so of his Assistant Referee, Andy Sainsbury awarded a spot kick which was duly dispatched by Matt Smith for Westbury’s opener.

James Ponsford got Cooper Avon back on level terms and it was game on and when Griffiths was denied by the post again Cooper were left cursing their luck and if things couldn’t get any worse they did when the unfortunate Jamie Oliver put through his own net for what proved to be Westbury’s winner.
