Division Four Report by Mr. M Schneider - Publications Secretary

Spartans pull off shock win over Potterne B

DIVISION FOUR: Audley Spartans arrived at Northbrook to take on Potterne 'B' on the back of a heavy 21-1 defeat against leaders Witham Friary last week with 13 players for what they thought would have been another mauling but Audley produced one of the shock results of the last few seasons as they gave from a goal down to claim a famous 3-1 win which will go along way to erasing the memory of last weeks loss.

Potterne were quick out of the blocks and immediately piled the pressure on the Spartans defence who managed to restrict the home team to long range shots. Potterne should have taken the lead but wasted several good chances. The Spartans battled well and Sam Baker was unlucky on a couple of occasions. The first, he failed to connect properly with a Steve Shipway through ball which was saved by the Potterne keepers' legs, the second was a fiercely struck volley at the far post after a fine passing move which saw Jason Forde cross the ball in for Baker to fire over the bar from just inside the penalty box.

Potterne kept pressing forward and finally broke the deadlock on 41 minutes with a neat passing move that sliced through the Spartans defence leaving Tom Mason with a simple tap in from close range.

The Spartans almost hit back immediately when Jason Forde made a fine run round the Potterne defence and tried to pull the ball back. Confusion reigned in the Potterne defence and the clearance was fired across goal narrowly missing Sam Baker running in on the far post.
The second half started with the Spartans dominating the play and pressing hard for the equalizer, they got their reward on 50 minutes when an Alan Woodward free kick was turned in by Sam Baker at the far post for his second goal of the season.

The Spartans continued to pile on the pressure on the Potterne defence and Alan Woodward put the visitors ahead when he stretched to turn in a Matt Blackmore shot. With the Spartans growing in confidence, the Potterne players started to drop their heads and with 20 minutes to go, Alan Woodward increased the Spartans lead when Sam Baker played a neat ball in for Woodward to score his third goal in two games.

The Spartans began to sit back a bit to maintain their lead which encouraged Potterne further forward and they came close to getting back into the game when a fine long range effort hit the bar, came back and hit keeper Stu Kofie in the Spartans goal on the back but the Potterne striker following up was unable to force the ball home as Kofie managed two excellent close range saves to deny a goal.

At the other end, Sam Baker has two further efforts cleared off the line and Alan Woodward missed a good opportunity to secure his first ever hat trick when he fired an indirect free kick inside the Potterne penalty area well over the bar. Potterne continued to press forward and Kofie was called upon several more times but the Spartans keeper was a match to everything the Potterne strikers could throw at him.

Potterne were reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes after a tussle for the ball with Spartans winger Richard Johnson led to Potterne player throwing a punch which received a straight red from the referee. During the last 10 minutes, Potterne pressed hard to try to get back into the match but the Spartans defence held firm and denied Potterne any late chances and held on to claim a well deserved victory.

This was a excellent all round team performance from every member of the Spartans squad who played who deserved ever plaudit they will get for the win which was unexpected but well deserved.

Corsham Park Rangers 1, Mash Tun Villa 1

Corsham Park Rangers had to come from behind to keep their unbeaten run intact, but they had to settle for a point from their match at Leafy Lane against Mash Tun Villa rather that the two they would have been expecting. Corsham Park who lost the earlier meeting of the sides 1-0 had not lost since that game which Mash Tun had not won so they will defiantly be the happier of the two teams following the draw.

After a scrappy but feisty first half it was Mash Tun who broke the deadlock when Dale Rowland netted on 47 minutes, but Rob Elliott’s side who were probably still celebrating the goal were pegged back a few minutes later when Kevin Bance was upended in the area and Simon Young duly dispatched the resulting penalty to earn Corsham Park a share of the spoils.

FC Boroughs 2, Somerford FC 1

FC Boroughs completed a league double over Somerford FC but unlike the previous meeting when they won 9-2 the return match was a lot closer as Boroughs claimed a 2-1 success.

Liam Bailey gave Boroughs the lead which was cancelled out when Jason Lovell leveled for Somerford. Paul Baines who had set up Bailey for Boroughs opener also provided the assist for their second which saw Kristian Hext net what proved to be the winner before Dale Hicks had a goal disallowed.

Gladstone Rovers 7, Kings Arms (All Cannings) 3

Kings Arms (All Cannings) may have scored three goals against joint leaders Gladstone Rovers but the Chippenham based side got the better of Jim Wilson’s side for the second time this season as they claimed a comfortable 7-3 win.

Gary Mills headed Kings Arms in front but Scott Nash restored parity with his first goal of the season. Robbie Burton’s first of the morning gave Gladstone a 2-1 lead but back came Kings Arms who made it two each thanks to debutant Alex Surman who scored from the penalty spot.

Goals from Fabian Prangle and Ian Savin gave Gladstone a 4-2 half time lead and in the second half they stepped up a gear as they sealed win number 10 of the campaign with further goals from Burton who scored two more goals to complete his hat trick and another from Prangle.

Kings Arms third goal came from Alex Surman and just like his first half effort it came from the penalty spot.

Lavington (Sunday) 6, Chippenham West End 1

Lavington (Sunday) maintained their 100% with a 6-1 win at home to Chippenham West End who had already suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Scott Clark’s side when the teams met in early September.

For Lavington it was their first game since the end of December and their first outing since they were disposed from the number one spot following the withdrawal of X Change from the League. In an incredible first 45 minutes all seven goals were scored the first coming from Lavington’s Myles Hickton, Hickton made it 2-0 before Adam Heath scored number three.

Good work from Dave Byatt and Joel Lander saw them combine to set up Phil Mellor for the West End goal. Craig Campbell who later saw red scored number four for Lavington, Hickton completed his hat trick with goal number five and Adam Heath’s second of the morning made up the victors half dozen.

Witham Friary 11, AFC Lyneham 0

Witham Friary have already set their stall out and having taking over at the top of the table a fortnight ago it is going to take something special to stop them from romping to the title. Witham hosted AFC Lyneham and like the sides that went before them Lyneham were put to the sword by Richard Gould’s side who romped to an 11-0 victory to claim a 10th straight win.

Simon Millard top scored wit ha five timer which took his tally for the season to 34 goals, Lewis Collier scored twice with Kirk Latham, Jamie Mines, Ashley Doel and Jason Collier sharing the others.

Ian Kennedy also missed a penalty for Witham but on this occasion his miss did little damage, along with Kennedy’s miss Witham were also denied a few more goals as they hit the woodwork on no less than five occasion.
