Division Four Report by Mr. M Schneider - Publications Secretary

West End hold rivals Gladstone to a goalless draw

Having secured the top spot in Division Four last weekend Gladstone Rovers were hoping for an extended stay in the number one spot, but their goalless draw away at Chippenham West End coupled with other results going against them saw them drop down the table to third place but they can still boast to be leaders along with Witham Friary and Lavington (Sunday) who all have 24 points to their name.

The match may have been short on goals but it was action and incident packed from the first whistle, the West End had the better chances and only a superb goalkeeping performance from Dan Hibberd kept Gladstone in a game that they should really have lost. Hibberd was brilliant as he saved a first half penalty from James Mulhall whose spot kick looked destined for the bottom corner before a Hibberd who was at full stretch somehow kept the ball out and to rub salt into West End’s wounds Tom Salter who gave the penalty away for a blatant deliberate handball wasn’t shown a card of any colour.

Robbie Burton went close to giving Gladstone the lead just before half time but had to watch in disbelief as his thunderbolt was tipped over the bar by Nick Doyle.

The second period saw Gladstone dominate possession but they were unable to find a breakthrough and they almost paid the price when a James Mulhall from 40 yards flew inches wide of the upright and substitute Darren Newman had a one on one with keeper Hibberd but fired over the bar.

Corsham Park Rangers 3, AFC Lyneham 0

Following back to back defeats against Witham Friary and Chippenham West End, Corsham Park Rangers avoided a third straight loss with a 3-0 victory at home to bottom side AFC Lyneham.

Corsham Park took the lead on 12 minutes, Kadir Ayhaw picked the ball up in his own half and from 30 yards out spotted the Lyneham keeper out of position and sent a delightful lob over the stranded keeper and into the empty net for 1-0. Corsham Park had to wait until the 60th minute before they increased their lead once again it was Ayhaw who found the target with another excellent finish low to the keepers right hand side after being set up by Jake Marshall.

Three minutes later Corsham Park sealed the win with another good finish this time it was Lydon Cambourne who fired the ball home to earn Martin Perrett’s side a much needed victory. Both teams played the match in an excellent sporting manner and referee Roger Lethaby had a fine game in the middle.

Lavington (Sunday) 2, Somerford FC 0

Lavington (Sunday) bounced back from their 4-2 defeat against Gladstone Rovers last weekend with a 2-0 victory at home to Somerford which sees them move back into one of the two automatic promotion places.

Having beaten Somerford 6-1 earlier in the campaign Scott Clark’s side would have expected a more convincing win but they were made to work hard by Gary Chandler’s side before claiming maximum points. After a goalless first half Jake Flower broke the deadlock and Adam Heath sealed the win with the all important second of the game.

Mash Tun Villa 5, Audley Spartans 1

Mash Tun Villa’s 5-1 home success over a struggling Audley Spartans side might not be the result of the day but it prove that the Trowbridge side are back in business as they have put the internal bickering which threatened to break the club up behind them and they can look forward to the remainder of a season which can only get better from here on in.

Since five straight defeats saw them plummet down the rankings Mash Tun have recovered well and a four match unbeaten run has seen them move up into eight place, their latest triumph came at the expense of an Audley side who themselves had been doing well. Dave Strickland’s first goal for Mash Tun gave them the lead but their lead was short lived as Steve Shipway raced onto a defence splitting pass from Sam Baker to fire Audley level.

Chris Stiles regained the lead for Mash Tun before Rob Elliott made it 4-1 with two well executed strikes and on the stroke of half time Matt Coles completed the scoring when he found the top right hand corner of the net with a perfectly placed penalty for 5-1 to cap an eventful first half.

Potterne ‘B’ FC 4, Kings Arms (All Cannings) 3

When Potterne B and Kings Arms (All Cannings) met back in November what was and exciting encounter finished four apiece so the eagerly awaited return match had a lot to live up to and it didn’t disappoint as the sides fought out another thriller with Potterne edging a seven goal classic 4-3 to end their four match winless run.

Goals from Ben Mason, Tom Mason and Lee Himsworth put Potterne three up and looking good for an easy win but Kings Arms struck back to reduce the arrears with Tom Roberts scoring a great solo effort on his debut.

Potterne regained their three goal cushion when Darren Folkard hit the target and with time running out Kings Arms decided to play and a double from Mike Booth which were his first goals fro the club took Jim Wilson’s side to within touching distance of their hosts and they had enough chances to have won or even drawn the game but it wasn’t too be as Potterne held out for victory.

Witham Friary 9, FC Boroughs 0

A week after Jake Pegler’s FC Boroughs brought a surprise end to Witham Friary’s 100% record with a 7-4 win the teams met in the reverse fixture and this time it was Richard Gould’s Witham Friary side who emerged triumphant as they avenged their defeat in style with a 9-0 victory on a pitch which Pegler said resembled Weymouth beach due to the amount of sand on it.

Goals from Dan Reynolds and Simon Millard gave Witham a 2-0 half time lead but the second half saw them take full advantage of Borough’s walking wounded as they hit seven more unanswered goals. Millard added two more to his first half effort to complete his hat trick.

Reynolds also hit the net gain for his second of the game, Kirk Latham claimed a three timer and a single from Jack Metcalf completed Witham’s nine-goal haul which due to Gladstone Rovers draw moves them back into pole position.
