Division One Report
by
Mr. M Schneider - Publications Secretary
Late goal give Pheasant points in top of the table battle
The top two teams in Division One went head to head at Yatton Kennell in
a brilliant game of football which ended with leaders Pheasant FC
scoring a late goal to claim a 2-1 victory over second placed FC
Bradford.
Only the heroics of Pheasant’s keeper Jack Forester kept his team in the
game in the first half as Bradford’s Jake and Sam Jordan caused their
hosts no end of problems but could only go into the interval with a 1-0
goal lead for their dominance which had been given to them by Jake
Jordan who also had a goal disallowed.
Joe Forester got Pheasant back on level terms and with time running out
it looked as if a draw which both teams said would have been the fairest
result was on the cards but a free kick from Joe Forester found Ryan
Tyrell to cut the ball back to Nathan Pritchard who fired home what
proved to be the decisive goal much to the annoyance of some of the
Bradford players who though the goal was offside but following
consultation between referee and lineman the goal stood as Pheasant had
drawn first blood in the race for the number one spot.
Although he ended up on the losing side Lee Stephens had a fantastic
game for Bradford in defence where he hardly lost a header all match and
even went close on two occasions to scoring for Pete Collier’s side.
Bradford News 3, North Bradley 5
The last time Bradford News and North Bradley clashed the latter claimed
the points with a comfortable 7-4 win, and the return match was just as
entertaining as Bradley came from three down to claim a 5-3 win.
Bradford lost the influential Danny Hurkett after just three minutes and
with no recognized goalkeeper they would have been expecting the worse
but goals from Mark Maguire, Ben Cowdrey and Adam Moody gave them a 3-0
lead with less than a quarter of the match played nad had it not been
for Bradley’s keeper Mark Binns Bradford may well have scored a few more
goals.
Bradley started their fight back on 30 minutes when Nathan Flower scored
the first of his three goals, Flower scored Bradley’s second to make it
2-3 when he netted from the penalty spot.
Bradley had to wait until the second half to get back on level terms and
it was Adam Mercer who tied the scores at three apiece before Reuben
Spong made it three goals in as many games when he gave Bradley the
lead. Nathan Flower put the icing on a great Bradley comeback when he
scored his teams fifth with his third on the morning.
FC Colerne 1, AFC Calne 3
AFC Calne made the trip to Colerne on a lovely sunny morning hoping to
continue their winning streak and complete a league double over their
hosts who they had beaten 6-0 earlier this season and Gareth Hadden’s
side duly obliged as they return home with maximum points after a 3-1
win.
Calne started the brighter of the two sides and had much of the play but
spurned several chances before Nathan West opened the scoring on 24
minutes. With Calne still pushing forward a second goal arrived two
minutes later when Dean Fry made it 2-0 and that was how it remained
until the break.
Calne came out in the second half thinking two goals were going to be
enough but Colerne had other ideas and the hosts were the better team in
the second half as they looked to get back in the game. Colerne threw
players forward and wasn’t long before they got a goal back when Charlie
Spirrell fired home, Spirrell then had a goal disallowed and the home
team tattle the woodwork as they had Calne under pressure and it looked
as if they would be next to score as they headed towards the final
whistle in charge.
Against the run of play Calne broke away and thanks to a mix up in the
Colerne defence Nathan West scored his second and Calne’s third on 85
minutes to seal the 3-1 wins for the visitors.
Miller Sports 2, Chippenham Sports & Social Club 1
Chippenham Sports & Social Club beat Miller Sports 5-1 at the start of
the December and their management duo of Jim Bevis and Bob Monteith
would have expected nothing less than another victory when the teams met
at the Beeches Shaw but Miller who had only won one of their previous 15
matches came out on top courtesy of a 2-1 win.
Chippenham Sports led 1-0 after 45 minutes thanks to Mark Clarke’s goal
after three minutes. Miller responded well in the second half and got
back on level term through Nick Groves. With both teams searching for a
winner the spoils went to Miller and it was Nick Groves who was their
hero when he scored his second of the contest to wrap up the win 15
minutes from time.
Chippenham Sports had the chance to get a point from the game but in the
dying seconds they were denied by the woodwork with Alan Farnish being
the unlucky player.
