A-Side 2007 Report
Report
by Mr. M Schneider - Publications Secretary
The Robson Taylor,
Chippenham Sunday League staged it’s annual Ken Clarke Memorial Trophy
6-a-side tournament at what after a wet start turned out to be a sun
drenched Leafy Lane on Sunday. The curtain raiser to the league season
which kicks off on Sunday 2 September is now in it’s eighth season saw
teams from Corsham Centre and Melksham based Foresters Arms capture the
first silverware of the season. After winning the trophy for the past
two seasons Corsham Centre B completed a hat trick of wins as a repeat
of last terms final saw them beat the Centre A team managed by Corsham
Town manager Mel Gingell. We three teams in the competition Foresters
Arms had a good chance of doing well but they surpassed their greatest
expectations as their C teams defeated their B side to take the Plate.
The tournament had been a sell out with 40 teams due to descend on Leafy
Lane, but the event was thrown into turmoil after six teams failed to
turn up much to the disappointment of the organisers but despite the
setback the competition was seen as another success and will again see
over £1000 handed to the Air Ambulance Fund.
Eventual Memorial Trophy winners Corsham Centre B didn’t have everything
their own way in the group stages but they did enough to top group C
which gave them a tie in the second round against The Ship A who they
beat 1-0. Biddestone reached the quarter final stages with a 2-0 success
against Cooper Avon B. Bradford based rivals Riverside Renegades B and
FC Bradford drew one apiece with Riverside progressing 3-1 after a
penalty shoot out. Corsham Centre A needed penalties to eliminate Pig &
Whistle United, with the Centre winning 5-4. The game between Foresters
Arms and The Ship B might have ended goalless, however the penalty shoot
out was a thriller, which the ship eventually claimed 9-8. Churchill
Arms had every reason to feel aggrieved; they had beaten Great Western B
4-2 and looked set for the final eight when it was noted that they
should have been playing the Great Western A team, in the re-match
Churchill suffered a 1-0 loss and to their credit they accepted the
mistake and the following elimination from the competition with dignity.
Holt A and AFC Melksham earned one-nil victories over respective
opponents Cooper Avon A and Miller Sports which saw two of the fancied
outsiders eliminated.
In the quarter finals Corsham Centre B ended Holt A’s interest in the
event as goals from Ross Lye (penalty) and Scott Lye saw them book a
semi-final berth. A very good Biddestone Social side saw off AFC
Melksham thanks to a goal apiece from Dan Lardner and Kevin Banks for
whom it was his seventh of the day. A highly charged contest between The
Ship A and Corsham Centre A ended 3-1 in favour of the Centre who took
the lead with a stunning strike from Simon Gray. Gray and Tom Ingle
scored again for the Centre before Nathan Flower scored the Ship’s
consolation from the penalty spot. The fourth quarterfinal match saw a
extra time double from Mike Blunsdon earn Great Western A a 2-0 victory
over Riverside Renegades B.
Corsham Centre B booked their place in a fifth successive final courtesy
of a Jamie Lyons goal, which saw, him end a gallant challenge from
Biddestone Social for whom he will be playing for when the campaign
kicks off shortly. The other semi-final saw The Centre’s A team lock
horns with Great Western A and although Phil Baker gave the Centre a
first half lead, missed chances almost proved costly as a late equaliser
from Tyler Sibbick took the game to extra time which failed to produce
any further goals. Keeper, Nick Gingell was the Centre’s hero in the
penalty shoot out as he produced to fine saves to help book his teams
place in their second successive final, James Lye and Tom Ingle’s
successful spot kicks saw them through.
The Ken Clarke Memorial Trophy final was very open and keenly contested
as both Centre sides battled for supremacy, their were chances at both
end in the first half prior to Dan King heading the Centre B in front
from Scott Lye’s excellent cross. Simon Gray restored parity for the
Centre A and was only denied the chance to put his team ahead by a
brilliant save from keeper Ross Lye. Centre B regained the lead through
Scott Lye and they sealed their fourth trophy win in five seasons when
Jamie Moss finished off an excellent team move that saw the ball moved
from one end of the pitch to the other with five deadly passes which
left Moss to finish with aplomb andwrap up another trophy success for
manager Martin Bradfield.
Having finished third in their respective group, eventual Plate winners
Foresters Arms C began their second bite of the cherry for glory in the
Plate competition with bye again Southwick Sports. Losing Finalists
Foresters Arms B defeated FC Bradford 2-0. Bremhill View Social Club was
the second of three teams who reached the quarterfinal stage without
kicking a ball as their opponents in the last 16, Kingfisher B were
forced to withdraw after injuries left them with just three players.
Injuries and work commitments also forced Trowbridge Town Supporters
Club to forfeit their planed meeting with Great Western B. Bath based
Norbin United were 2-0 victors over Old Road Tavern A as were Riverside
Renegades A who sent Holt B packing. Old Road Tavern B thumped Kings
Arms (Market Lavington) 3-0 while Crown A defeated their B team 2-0 to
book the final spot in the last eight.
Bremhill View Social Club reached the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory Old
Road Tavern A courtesy of a superb head goal from Terry Cox. Both of the
Foresters Arms teams left in the competition were pushed to the limit
before emerging victorious to arrive in the final four. The Arms C side,
owed their 1-0 triumph to an extra time goal from Kane Udeh while the
Foresters BN team beat Norbin United 3-2 on penalties thank to
successful efforts from Dean Potter, Leon Ireland and Marc Pearce. A
goal apiece from Nick Buckle and Jack Fisher sealed Crown A’s progress
as they beat Great Western B 2-0.
Both semi finals of the Plate competition ended 2-1 with the Foresters
Arms C seeing off Bremhill View Social Club, Terry Cox scored for the
Calne based team while Kane Udeh and Jack Spence won the match Dave
Robinson’s side. In the other semi final Dean Potter’s brace against his
former club ended their dreams of glory, Jack Fisher scored the losers
consolation.
The final of the Plate competition may not have produced a goal fest, as
both Foresters Arms C and B cancelled each other out and it took just
one goal to win it for the Carpenters against the Lumberjacks. After a
first half of few chances Kane Udeh went close to putting the C team in
front with his effort hitting the post. Keeper Owen Hutchinson then came
to his sides rescue when he produced a fine stop to keep his goal
intact. Within seconds of Hutchinson great stop Kane Udeh struck what
proved to be the winner as his neat finish earned the Carpenters a
surprise but deserved win of the Plate trophy.
Following both finals, the trophies, which were kindly sponsored by Ken
Clarke from WG Parr Trophy sponsors Westernsport Trophies of Chippenham,
were presented to the players by Andy Hillier. Victorious captain Dave
Robinson was first up to pick up the Plate trophy for Foresters Arms C
before Dan King, the Centre’s winning captain stepped up to lift the Ken
Clarke Memorial Trophy. Andy Hillier, tournament organiser said that
“they were again very grateful to everyone for their support and help on
the day, especially the match officials, Ady Hunt, Chris Morris, Neil
Hickton, Derek Turner, Frank Harvey, Steve Higgins and Roger Smith and
to people who worked behind the scenes to get the event up and running”
Hillier added “that the day had gone well in spite of the no show of six
teams, which threw the tournament into disarray for a while until we
were able to get a clear picture of what was happening, but at the end
of the day we were their to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and once
again it is hoped that we will present them with a cheque for over
£1,000 at our November SGM”.
