Stonehenge
Stonehenge was constructed in three
stages. The first was a circular ditch and bank (visible on the picture to the
left). The second was a wooden construction at the centre. The third was the
stone structure still standing today. There are two types of stone the smaller
stones are called Bluestones they are from the Preseli mountains in Wales. The
large stones are from the Marlborough Downs. For some unknown reason the
Bluestones are a warm stone, at the entrance there are two samples of the
stones, regardless of the weather conditions the Bluestone is always warmer.
To preserve Stonehenge you are no
longer able to walk directly up to the stones but there is a walkway around the
outside and audio guides in nine languages are available.
Stonehenge is 2 miles west of
Amesbury it is approximately 40 minutes from
Chippenham and is an English Heritage Site.
